Croque-Monsieur

I first heard of Croque-Monsieur while I was watching the movie It's Complicated.  Its in a scene when Jake, Jane's ex, is waiting outside her house until her date leaves and then he comes in as says, "Is that croque-monsieur?"  I have to be honest at first I thought he said crump laSuier, which doesn't even exist.  I know this because I spent several hours trying to google it.  Apparently I need to get my hearing tested.  Anyway, come to find out this exotic sounding french dish is nothing more than a hot ham and cheese sandwich, but it is oooh sooo good!  There are many different variations of this sandwich, which literally means "crunchy Mr."

I chose to make the sandwich with the cheese between the bread instead of on top of the bread.  There also is a Croque-Madame which is the same sandwich with an egg on top.

The ingredients needed are 2 slices of bread, cheese ( I used grated gruyere and highly recommend it), ham and butter.

First butter both slices of bread

Next you will want to add the sliced ham.  Be generous this is a french dish afterall

Top with the grated gruyere

Put the other slice of buttered bread on top.

Grill both side until it has a nice crunch to it and all the cheese is melted.

Now you have made a Croque-Monsier.  Don't tell your friends its just a hot ham and cheese.  They will be so impressed.  Also since this was a french inspired meal I thought I would add my home made...
